Sonam Wangchuk is a Ladakhi engineer, education reformer, innovator, and the real-life inspiration behind Aamir Khan's character "Phunsukh Wangdu" in the blockbuster film 3 Idiots. He is the founder of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) and inventor of the Ice Stupa.
Wangchuk began a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in solidarity with CJP's education reform demands. His protest focused on three specific issues: the NEET paper leak scandal, the CBSE rechecking fee exploitation, and the broader failure of India's education system to prepare students for actual employment.
His presence at the protest site transformed CJP from a digital movement to a national conscience movement. When India's most respected education reformer — a man who had literally inspired a generation through cinema — sat on hunger strike alongside Gen Z meme-makers, it sent an unmistakable signal.
After Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, Wangchuk ended his hunger strike. Breaking his fast, he declared: "This is not my victory. This is not CJP's victory. This is the victory of every student who was told they don't matter."
Wangchuk continues to advise the CJP movement on education policy and remains committed to pushing for all five demands in the CJP Manifesto.
